- Balanitis refers to inflammation/infection of the head (glans) of the penis. It occurs much more commonly in uncircumcised males. The cause is usually a candida (yeast) or bacterial infection.

- Burning
- Itching
- Pain
- Discharge

- Head of penis appears red, irritated, and may discharge pus.
|
 |
- Soak with dilute aluminum acetate for 15 minutes, twice a day.
- Topical Nystatin or imidazole cream
- Oral antibiotics if a severe bacterial infection is suspected
- Urologic consultation if symptoms do not resolve rapidly

- Careful hygiene, especially in those who are uncircumcised -- the foreskin should be retracted and the glans, including the crevice, should be gently washed with soap and water during daily baths/showers.
- If infections recur, circumcision will effectively eliminate all future infections.
