- This occurs when an abscess of the meibomian gland of the eyelid (i.e., an internal Hordeolum abscess) is followed by granulomatous (a type of inflammatory reaction) inflammation.

- Hard, nontender swelling of the upper or lower eyelid
- The white of the eye is red and elevated.
- Vision may be impaired if the chalazion presses against the cornea of the eye.

- Incision and curettage by an ophthalmologist
- Warm wet compresses
- It may subside spontaneously.
