Muscle Strain

more about Muscle Strain

Musculoskeletal strain

  • Stretching or partial tearing of muscle fibers causing pain and swelling.

  • Pain and ache in the affected muscle
  • There may be an immediate onset of symptoms, or onset 1-2 days after theinjury .
  • Usually the pain and ache are markedly less after 7-10 days, or have resolved.

  • Injury
  • Overuse of a muscle

  • This is a diagnosis of exclusion (i.e., process of elimination), involving localized muscle pain, with compatible history, that resolves in short order.
  • Muscle pain with normal X-rays
  • Absence of positive neurologic findings: no sensory losses; no significant long-lasting motor losses (muscle strength, bulk, tone are close to normal); deep tendon reflexes unchanged from previously.

  • More likely to occur in teenage years rather than in pre-teens
  • Heavy lifting or repetitive lifting
  • Lifting while twisting the body rather than facing the lifted object squarely
  • Vigorous sports

  • A few days of rest, while relieving tension on the affected part
  • Ice or heat is sometimes recommended
  • Anti-inflammatory medication, if the person is not sensitive to it
  • Physical therapy

  • A non-remitting pain in the recovery period is unusual for muscle strain.

  • Discuss with your physician, if resolution does not occur in short order.

  • Disease of muscle or of nerve
  • Most of the serious diseases causing this kind of pain will have pain that is more severe and longer lasting.
