  • This is a condition in which pus collects in proximity to several lymph nodes in the potential space at the back of the throat, a space that usually disappears during the first 3-4 years of life.
  • It usually occurs in children who are younger than 5 years of age.

  • High fever
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Refusing feedings
  • Sore throat
  • Neck stiffness, neck swelling, hyperextension of the head
  • Noisy respiration
  • Rapid, labored respiration

  • It is caused by infections in the potential space in the back of the throat.
    1. Aerobic organisms, such as group A hemolytic Streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus
    2. Oral anaerobic organisms

  • Lateral neck X-ray shows pus-filled space between throat and vertebrae of the neck.
  • Blood test shows elevated white blood cell count.
  • Throat culture shows organism.
  • Rapid, labored respiration
  • Computed tomography can identify an early abscess.


  • Antibiotics
  • Analgesic drugs
  • Incision and drainage of abscess


  • Your child needs immediate attention if he/she develops a high fever with throat pain and breathing difficulty.
