ACE Inhibitor-induced Cough

more about ACE Inhibitor-induced Cough

  • Angiotensin -- converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are medications (e.g., Captopril, Enalapril, Ramipril, etc.) often used in treatment of High Blood Pressure, Heart Failure, and in cases of diabetes, to protect the kidneys.  One of the side effects of these drugs is dry cough (in 10% of users).
  • The cough is not dangerous, and usually stops when the medication is changed or discontinued by the doctor.  There are also medications such as Picotamide (currently being researched and not available in the U.S. yet) that can stop or reduce coughing when discontinuing medication is not an option.
