- With local anesthesia, a bone marrow needle is inserted
into the medullary cavity of a bone. Fluid and marrow cells
are aspirated into a glass syringe. Slide and culture
specimen may be
obtained.

- To evaluate hematopoiesis
- To diagnose malignancy of primary and metastatic origin
- To determine the cause of infection
- To evaluate the progression of some hematologic diseases
or the response of the marrow to chemotherapy
treatment
