- There are two substances generally used in
breast implants, creating two types -- silicone and
saline, both of which are encapsulated in a silicone
container. The capsule may be filled with silicone gel,
saline, or both.
- Two major problems can occur
-- contracture and rupture. Contracture occurs when the
capsule of the implant contracts, causing distortion and
possible breast pain. Rupture occurs when the capsule of the
implant breaks or leaks, releasing its fluid into the
surrounding breast
tissue.

- There have been numerous claims that silicone implant
rupture increases the risk of autoimmune disease (disease
where body attacks itself), specifically scleroderma.
Lawsuits have been initiated exploring this association,
although medical studies have yet to substantiate such
claims. If you have unusual symptoms, you should see
your physician. It is generally recommended to remove
silicone implants in those who have symptoms.
- Cancer and Breast Implants
- Breast implants do not increase the risk of breast
cancer, but they do make it more difficult to detect breast
cancer early, because mammograms do not work as well with breast implants (though they should still be done).
