Glycosylated Hemoglobin assay (= Hemoglobin A1)


  • Blood

  • Normal, healthy person 5.5-8.8% of total hemoglobin
  • Diabetic under control 7.5%-11.4% of total hemoglobin
  • Hemoglobin A1a: 1.7% of total hemoglobin
  • Hemoglobin A1b: 0.8% of total hemoglobin
  • Hemoglobin A1c: 3.56% of total hemoglobin

  • To assess in diabetic control
  • It is not affected by recent changes in diet or medication, like fasting blood glucose.
  • Diabetics who are poorly controlled will have a glycosylated hemoglobin value that is more than 12% of the total hemoglobin value
