- In the inguinal (groin) area of the
body there is a natural weakness in the muscle layers of the lower
abdomen. When a piece of intestine pushes through this weak
region, the result is called a
hernia.

- Often unknown
- Lifting
- Straining

- Made on examination by a
physician

- Surgical repair of the hernia,
repositioning the intestine into the abdomen and then closing the muscle layers. There are multiple techniques, generally done under spinal anesthesia (meaning general anesthesia is usually not needed).
- Stool softeners are sometimes
prescribed prior to surgery to help prevent
incarceration.
|
 |
- Incarceration -- the hernia may become trapped in the muscle layers and its blood supply cut off, causing necrosis (dead tissue) of this portion of the bowel. This can lead to severe illness and death.
