Lactose tolerance test


  • Blood, urine, feces

  • Adult
    1. Blood glucose increases less than 20-30 mg/dl above the fasting level.
    2. Urine lactose (24hours): 12-40 mg/ dl
    3. Feces: PH 7-8; glucose < 1+
  • Child

- Urine lactose (24-hour): < 1.5 mg/100 dl


  • It verifies Lactose Intolerance -- lactase insufficiency.
  • It is used in workup for abdominal distension, Chronic Diarrhea, and abdominal cramps associated with the ingestion of milk to investigate the cause of malabsorption syndrome.


  • Failure to maintain dietary and exercise restrictions
  • Delayed emptying of the stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Diabetes Mellitus
