- Melanosis Coli is a benign condition of the colon. It is an abnormality noticed during Sigmoidoscopy or
Colonoscopy. During the exam, the doctor will usually
see brown spots or a discoloration of the wall of the
colon. It appears in patients who abuse
laxatives. The laxatives most commonly associated with
this finding are cascara, senna, and aloe-based
products. It is not a serious condition, and there is
no specific treatment is needed. Actually, the patient
just needs to stop abusing laxatives.
