more about Cleft Lip

Normal

Abnormal
  • Cleft Lip is a developmental defect resulting from incomplete fusion of the embryonic tissue that normally merges in the fetus (4-6 weeks) to form the mouth and jaws, thus leaving an opening or groove between the mouth and the nose. The opening may vary in size.
  • The exact cause is unknown, but there may be genetic component.
  • The disfigurement is often very traumatic for children, but luckily facial reconstructive surgeries are becoming more advanced in correcting the problem.
