- This is a condition in which pus collects in proximity to several lymph nodes in the potential space at the back of the throat, a space that usually disappears during the first 3-4 years of life.
- It usually occurs in children who are younger than 5 years of age.

- High fever
- Swallowing difficulties
- Refusing feedings
- Sore throat
- Neck stiffness, neck swelling, hyperextension of the head
- Noisy respiration
- Rapid, labored respiration

- It is caused by infections in the potential space in the back of the throat.
- Aerobic organisms, such as group A hemolytic Streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus
- Oral anaerobic organisms
|

- Lateral neck X-ray shows pus-filled space between throat and vertebrae of the neck.
- Blood test shows elevated white blood cell count.
- Throat culture shows organism.
- Rapid, labored respiration
- Computed tomography can identify an early abscess.

- Antibiotics
- Analgesic drugs
- Incision and drainage of abscess
