  • Dengue is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans by the Aedes mosquito, located in Thailand, India, Philippines, Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central America, and Africa.  Outbreaks have occurred in the southern United States, mostly during the warm seasons when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Mild
    1. May have no symptoms
    2. Fever and mild illness
  • Severe infection
    1. High fever
    2. Chills
    3. Severe aching in the arms, legs, head, and back
    4. Sore throat
    5. Depression
    6. Severe illness
    7. Rash
    8. Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract
    9. Shock

  • Laboratory
    1. Decreased white blood cell
    2. Decreased platelets
    3. Virus in blood

  • Severe infections:
    1. Intravenous fluids
    2. Blood pressure support medications as needed
    3. Tylenol for pain (avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories)

  • Insect repellants
  • Vaccine has been developed
  • Mosquito control by government authorities in affected areas
