This is an
infection in the muscles of the heart, most commonly caused
by the Coxsackievirus that follows upon a respiratory or
viral illness. Bacteria and other infectious agents (e.g.,
rickettsiae, fungi, etc.) may also be causal
factors.

Fever
- Chest pain with a deep breath
- Shortness of
Breath

- Rapid heart rate
- S3 gallop
- Lung crackles
- Leg swelling (edema)
- EKG may show conduction disturbance, ventricular ectopy, or non-specific ST changes
- Echocardiogram to evaluate heart function
- Gallium scan may show inflammation of the heart
- Serum viral or other infectious titers may be checked
- Endomyocardial biopsy
is diagnostic

- Anti-microbial agents (e.g., antibiotics) if a specific cause can be found
- Corticosteroids may be of some benefit
- Treat Heart Failure and
heart arrythmias, if they
occur

- Some individuals have a full recovery, while others develop permanent heart damage (cardiomyopathy).
